Coaching Fit For You

Holistic Approach—

With fifteen years of coaching experience working with business leaders, teen, twenty-something and age-group athletes, I work with individuals, teams, corporations and organizations. Whether it’s performance coaching, mindset and mental skills training or developing strategies and plans for cyclists and endurance athletes, I take an athlete centric, holistic approach to coaching and development of the individual in order to help them become the best versions of themselves.

Whenever a client or parent entrusts me with coaching them or their young athlete, I consider this an honor and privilege, and I make it my mission to add value and make a positive impact.

find your podium—

Coaching to me is all about connection and relationships. With fifteen years of coaching experience in various sports, I learned long ago that the athlete/coach relationship is all about trust and forming a bond built upon the pillars of mutual respect,  cooperation and shared commitment to the goals ahead. It’s less about the X’s and O’s, data or training plans (though this stuff matters too), and more about connection and forging authentic relationships where the athlete feels valued and heard.

Anyone can pull a motivational presentation, catch phrases or training plan off the web, or repeat old mantras, but coaching is so much bigger than talking points, a single session or single workout, or plan; it’s a science and an art. As a coach I’m committed to keeping up with the freshest research and thinking in mental performance along with the latest science surrounding fitness and endurance training. I’m committed to a continuous and enduring effort to building my mental strength coaching tool-kit to support and coach up my athletes.

The Bottom Line—

As a coach, I’m a confidence giver, inspiring and elevating the performers I work with, teaching athletes to ‘lock in and lock out,’ guiding athletes to get lost in the fight, while controlling what they can. I’m here to help performers grow and reach their fullest potential on and off the court/field, in and out of the water, on and off the bike.

First and foremost, because I care.

And because I’ll go ALL IN on supporting, mentoring and coaching you up to become your truest and strongest self in and out of the water, on and off the bike, wherever it is that your passion takes you to compete and perform.

I’m passionate about working with athletes of all levels and abilities, ranging from high level athletes (scholarship seeking high schoolers, college and pro) to those hoping to finish their first big endurance event (age groupers, physically challenged and masters athletes)—no athlete is too fast or too slow and no event, race or goal is too big or too small.

If you want achieve more than you currently believe your mind and body are capable of, or if you’re looking to take your fitness, training or race day efforts to another level, I’d love to be a part of your team and collaborate together to provide you with the tools and mindset to dig deep, stay true and lean in to the human and citizen athlete you hope to become.

Why would you want a performance coach?

The best coaching, training plans, and skill development sessions mean little for an athlete without the right mindset—and just like developing an endurance engine or technical skills, developing a strong mental game takes time, effort, expertise and practice. As a coach, athlete and dad (to a high-level swimmer, mountain biker and runner), I’ve witnessed and experienced firsthand the critical nature of the mental skills equation, which literally makes or breaks, not only the performance, but the experience. My mission is to help strengthen your mental strategies and the way you look at things.

    My process

With fifteen years of coaching experience and mentoring in IFS (Internal Family System—better known as Parts Work) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, I utilize IFS and Cognitive Behavioral techniques along with  Positive Coaching, always  meeting athletes where they’re at. From youth to elite, injured to full gas, I guide athletes through the power of positive visualization, creating space for profitable parts, developing fortitude and mental toughness (not that old school toughness, but a toughness grounded in true-self and wise-mind) by fostering self-awareness and embracing a positive growth mindset. The mission is simple: help athletes become their strongest and truest self.

    let’s team up

My approach to coaching an athlete is never cookie-cutter, but personalized and custom tuned for the athlete I’m working with. Whether it’s mindset coaching (rituals and routines to the importance of being adaptable, positive psychology to legacy work, fortitude to goal setting), or working together to develop training plans to help athletes reach their goals (bouncing forward from injury, a one day epic, stage race or season), I’m there to guide and support athletes from start to finish.

    Cycling Coaching

My wheelhouse is working with Juniors, Jill’s and Joe’s, under-23 riders and age groupers who have big dreams and goals, on and off the bike. Knowing every rider, racer and athlete has their own strengths and weaknesses, their own physiology (overtraining or the female athlete triad) and psychology (coming back from injury or struggling with performance anxiety), I meet each athlete where they’re at. Recognizing that everyone responds differently to training and everyone has their own challenges and conflicts that can make bouncing forward from injury, or preparing for that century ride, stage race, one day epic, or NICA season, a steep task, I’m there support my athletes from start to finish.

If I don’t have the answers, I’ll seek them out and if I feel like another coach is a better fit, I know some of the best USA Cycling certified coaches in the country.

My mission is to foster a sustainable approach to training by adopting holistic coaching and training methods that focus on the entire athlete—not just the cyclist or swimmer.

    —Training With Purpose

My coaching philosophy is about training with purpose: being mindful, thoughtful and progressive; teaching my athletes to train intuitively, while creating sustainable objectives to build biological durability for the long haul (mentally and physically).

I don’t adhere to the “no pain no gain” or “go big or go home”, mantras (though we will do hard work on the bike), nor do I believe in the “epic” workout to save the day, but instead we’ll focus on the importance of consistency and sustainability.  My coaching and training philosophy is about you. It’s about learning what works for you. It’s about helping you—the athlete, become the strongest, truest and best version of yourself.

My work as a cycling coach is focused on customizing training plans to fit the goals of each individual athlete I work with, while remaining agile and adaptable in our approach. With each month we work together our Coach/Athlete relationship will deepen through regular check-ins and continuous support. Together we’ll foster your peak performance for race day and beyond.

The healing power of rituals and routines

“There are so many people in this world who will make grand claims, who will try to sell you on what they can do but are unable to show you with their actions. Every game, every practice, every meeting spent with Coach, the passion, love, and energy he put into every minute was incredibly obvious. Its easy to use big words, and grand terms that sound good in theory, but witnessing true passion in action is infectious and cannot fail to inspire you to try and live the same way.”

Storytelling is the heart of the Be Audacious blog. Each post is a medley of thoughts, observations, training tips and stories.

With so much noise out there telling us how to be, how to train, how to think, how to live, it’s my hope that this blog can help readers redefine what success looks like (a deeply personal thing and matter of perspective), while combating the demons of self-doubt and fear that so often accompany athletic pursuits, creative endeavors, bold adventures and passion projects.
